Be Willing to Risk

“The way to succeed is to double your error rate.” – Thomas J. Watson

When Jon Krakauer faced the seemingly impossible climb up Everest, he knew the risks. He knew that there had been many that had gone before him and never made it back. As he climbed upward, battling sub-zero temperatures and passing those who had fallen before him, he knew he was taking a very big risk. However, he survived and became a national celebrity for it.

While you don’t have to climb Mount Everest to succeed in your goals, you must be willing to take risks. Without risk, success will forever elude you. Talk to any successful individual and they will tell you that, without risk, they wouldn’t be where they are today.

Aim High

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Too often, we sell ourselves out. Instead of aiming for success, we aim for “just good enough to get by.” When we do this, we find ourselves unhappy, in a rut, and never becoming the success that we could be.

If you’ve dreamed of being CEO of your own corporation, yet you are – again – limiting yourself and begin telling yourself that such a goal is absurd and unattainable, then the outcome is undeniable. You’ll remain where you are until you begin to understand that everyone who has accomplished seemingly unattainable goals has begun from right where you are: the beginning.

Climbing to the Top and Staying There

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

There is a common truth that scares some and empowers others: Anyone can be a success if they have a plan and are willing to succeed. Literally thousands of books sit in the self-help and business sections of bookstores and libraries that give you page by page instructions on how to succeed. However, the process is very simple if you are willing to be open-minded and work to succeed.

Over the next several days I will touch on what I believe are some of the factors to creating long-term success in your life. Would love a lively debate if you agree or disagree. It is healthy to disagree.

1.    Accept No Limitations

2.    Aim High

3.    Be Willing to Risk

4.    Failure Is Not an Option

5.    Love People

6.    Develop a Servant’s Heart

7.    Seek Mentors

8.    Be Positive

9.    Develop a Strong Spiritual Life

Accept No Limitations

Our doubts are traitors,
And make us lose the good we oft might win
By fearing to attempt.

- William Shakespeare, “Measure for Measure”

When Walt Disney began his animation company, he hard trouble finding steady work. He went bankrupt, at least, seven times and was once the victim of intellectually property theft with no legal recourse. He was told that a theme park in California that centered around his own films would not prosper and that if he went through with the idea of a themed amusement park, the venture would put him under.

Imagine if Walt Disney had taken that advice and limited himself. What limitations are you putting on yourself? How are you stifling your own creativity and success by listening to the limiting advice of those who limit themselves? What project or idea are you tossing aside because you feel it’s too big, too “out there” or would simply never work? Imagine if you took Walt Disney’s advice, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”  Stop being a prisoner of doubt and limiting yourself to what others see as impossible.

What do you think – dare to share some of your dreams with us?

Tomorrow we will talk about Aiming High.
