Be Careful with Perseverance

Is there ever a time to quit?  Let’s explore.

As a small business owner, one of the qualities we all hear about in the stories of those who have “made it” is to never give up. To persevere at all cost, to “burn the ship” as Hernando Cortez did when he landed his ships ashore.   He had only one objective…seize the great treasures that the Aztecs possessed.

Maybe you have all heard the famous quote by Churchill; “Never, Never, Never Give Up” that many motivational speakers often misquote. What Churchill said was:

“Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.”

The idea of never giving up – appeals to most of us, it appeals to our sense of purpose, our convictions, it makes us feel good about ourselves if we keep going against all the odds. We are made to feel inferior by those in authority in our lives as we grow up. To quit makes you a loser. I completely disagree.

Of course, there are things in life that you do not want to ever quit. Pursuit of your passion would be one. However, I believe one of the most important skills a business owner can cultivate is the ability to know when it’s time to quit. To cut bait and move on as they say.

If the ladder you are climbing towards success has a cliff at the top, it may be wise to discern that before you get there? However, if you have the mentality that all it takes is hard work, and a never say die attitude you are headed for trouble. You won’t be able to see the danger ahead. You will not see the clues that are being presented to you that it is time quit and climb a different ladder.

If you have determined your purpose and you know for certain you are pursuing the right dream, I would encourage you to never quit. However, you may have to quit how you are pursuing it several times on the way as you discover what will work.

If you notice in the Churchill quote he says, “never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.”

In other words – stay true to yourself, never quit on you or your beliefs. Use your common sense, but learn how to quickly quit on the tactics – the how to, of your dreams, or you will be climbing up the wrong ladder and when you get to the top you will have realized it is too late.

Setting clear, laser focused goals is critical for achievement; however, only 3% write them down according to a Harvard study. Meaning 97% of the people do not have written goals. The big WOW is the 3% on average earned 10 times the 97%.

Sales Is a Funny Thing

Are you responsible for selling? Be careful how you answer, because the truth may surprise you.

I believe that everyone sells. No matter what role you play in your organization, there are times you need to influence the behavior of others, and this is selling.

Selling is the act of influencing the outcome in a manner that benefits all involved.

If you’re a front-line manager of 12 people on an assembly line, you better be good at selling: Selling your team on working together, doing the best job possible, being content with the company and many other things that make everyone’s daily lives easier and more productive. If you don’t, trouble can loom quickly.

No one escapes from selling. Therefore, sales ability is one of the keystone skills everyone should always work to improve.

How are you improving your sales skills?

If I may, let me provide a few tips that could be of help.

  1. Learn how to talk benefits instead of features.
  2. Stop communicating and start connecting.
  3. ABL – Always Be Learning.
  4. Have fun.

Take responsibility, and go make it happen.
